Question: Has anyone here suffered a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)? I have, and was wondering where the support group is for that? There was a website (bit.listserv.tbi-support) but it is largely inactive. Does anyone know where people who have suffered a brain injury are posting? Also, I'm curious for those of you here who are head injured, how are you coping? For me, it has seriously affected my moods.
Answer: Mild traumatic brain injury does not produce post traumatic stress disorder. We challenged the widely-held belief that patients who experience mild traumatic brain injury can develop a concomitant post traumatic stress disorder. We found marked differences in the symptoms reported by traumatic brain injured (TBI) patients and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. TBI patients were rendered unconscious and did not remember details of the accident. On the contrary, PTSD patients did not loose consciousness and were plagued by intrusive recollections of the accident. All of the PTSD patients provided highly detailed information about the accident; none of the TBI patients could do so. Some symptoms, however, were not diagnostic. Patients in both groups reported memory problems, problem solving difficulties, and social-interpersonal difficulties. The implications of these findings are that PTSD patients should not be informed that they have a brain injury since this could serve to worsen the PTSD, and 2) that PTSD should be ruled out before making the diagnosis of a brain injury
