Head Injury Recovery

Question:
How many serious head injury victims have you dealt with in your 10 year career? How many of them, and what percentage, have been cyclists? What are the sources of the other severe head injuries? I am a healthcare professional and during my 10 year plus career, have treated many victims of Closed Head Injury Syndrome. It is ALWAYS a tragedy as the victims are always "young" fit, vital, otherwise healthy indivduals who usually made a bad choice (e.g.not wearing a helmet while cycling, skating, climbing, etc. not wearing a seatbelt) which ultimately changes their lives forever.

Answer: you should understand that we _know_ the national statistics. We _know_ that cyclists are only a tiny percentage (1% to 2%) of serious or fatal head injuries. We also know that motor vehicle occupants are roughly 50% of the problem, nationwide.

This has been confirmed by many people who've posted as you did, when challenged. It was confirmed by a professional head injury recovery counselor I talked extensively with - in seven years full-time work, she'd seen only _one_ cyclist, a racer (which means he probably wore a helmet!). In fact, the ONLY "health care professionals" who didn't confirm these facts were those who slunk away, never to post again. Embarrassment, I imagine.

You probably _don't_ know that the risk of fatality from cycling, per hour, is _less_ than that from motoring. But given the tremendous number of head injuries that occur inside cars, I wonder why you're harrassing cyclists?
