Question: Around here, the rednecks like to ride around with their dogs untethered in the back of their open pickup trucks. The dogs run from one side to the other, balancing themselves on the edge while the truck is traveling fifty miles per hour. It gives me heart palpitations to be behind one of these trucks and observe this. It would only take a bump in the road or a squirrel catching the dog's eye to cause disaster. However, the prevailing redneck attitude toward pets seems to be that they can easily and cheaply be replaced, so who cares? IS the enjoyment the dog may get from hanging his head out the window really worth the risk of severe eye/head injury from bugs/road debris/branches? I think NOT. Open the window an inch or two, enough for Fido to be able to smell everything but not enough to hang his head out. He'll still have a ball and be a lot safer.
Answer: I never did learn that you could hang your head out the window! She was trained to lie quietly on the floor or on thwe back seat of our car with a safety harness. Tucker sits in my lap or in his carrier. he does like to look out the window, but I do not allow him to stick his head out farther than the tip of his nose. Flying debris can hurt dogs' eyes or even strike them in the face or head. Dogs loose in the back of a pickup truck are a disaster *waiting* to happen. If we ever have a large dog again, the dog will be trained as Del was to be on the floor. I witnessed minor chaos this morning. Woman in car with dog in the back seat at a stop sign. The car window was wide open. On the other side of the street a man walking is dog. Barking ensued. The car started moving. The dog in the car jumped out of the open window to get to the dog on the other side, almost being iht by an oncoming car, which luckily stopped. Panicked woman driver screaming. Several cars coming to a h Dog being walked escapes from leash. General mayhem ensues, till a roundup can be made. I know I dog likes to stick his head out of an open window, but you either should strap in the dog or don't open the window as far. I hope the lady learned her lesson it could have been a lot worse.
