Question: Mild Brain Injury - "Mild" is a representation not of the severity of an injury but of the difficulty of diagnosing diffuse (axonal shearing) brain injuries or measuring the impact of this sometimes severe brain trauma. One of my doctors called it Minimal Brain Injury to which I take strong exception. Many people have asked what word would better describe this injury. I have thought of suggesting Diffuse Brain Injury DBI but once again each BI is unique and each person with a BI is unique. How did you one?
Answer: Many weeks ago, I used the term MBI (minimal brain injury or mild brain injury) to refer to my condition. There were people who were upset with this term as they thought it minimized the damage, and there were others who had questions about what constituted MBI. I promised to dig up the criteria my neuropsychologist gave me, and I have finally remembered to bring the information into the office. I post it below for interest. I am in no way minimizing the effects of MBI. I have it, and I will have to live with its negative effects for the rest of life, but I'm of the school that the more information we have the better, and MBI seems to be a term used professionally.
