Acute Brain Injury

Question:
my position is quite conservative. There is simply no evidence that headgear protects against brain injury. There IS evidence that it does not protect against acute injury e.g. concussion (hence 0% benefit).

There's nothing to overstate or retract or modify. My position remains the same as it was the first time we "met". Which is not to say that I am immovable on this position. All I'd ask for is evidence that headgear reduces brain injury in boxers.

Wouldn't it be simpler just to provide this evidence that headgear reduces brain injury in boxers rather than to continue to "argue" with me?

I also looked for an AMA position paper on those little nose sticky things that football players wear to open their nostrils. Amazingly, there is no AMA position paper that says that nose-stickies do NOTHING to protect the brain! Does this mean that nose-stickies mitigate brain injury? Now, I'm not saying that they prevent ALL brain injury (only an idiot would do that!), but clearly the AMA believes that nose-stickies DO prevent SOME brain injury. Why else would there be no position paper saying the opposite?

Answer: you scoff at the existing study that quantified the beneficial effect of headgear in reducing acute neurologic injury (0% as you will recall). Furthermore, I assume from your response that you tacitly admit that there are no studies that support your position.

"The value of protective headgear protecting against brain injury is controversial. Although headgear decreases the number of facial lacerations, it does not reduce the number of knockouts." - Jordan BD. Neurologic aspects of boxing.

Since you are fond of searches, perhaps you should recheck our old "discussions". As you will see, I have no objection to the AMA recommendation that boxers wear headgear. In fact, I have mentioned that I advocate the use of headgear and wear headgear myself. There is clear evidence that headgear protects against ocular injuries (see above) and no evidence that it protects against neurologic injury. Please carefully re-read the AMA statement that you cited (or perhaps re-post it). It clearly mentions that there is evidence that headgear reduces ocular injury. It conspicuously does not state that headgear reduces neurologic injury. This is completely in line with the current state of the medical literature.

The problem is your insistence that headgear reduces brain injury. There is no evidence that it does. You keep asking for an AMA statement that headgear doesn't reduce brain injury - I'm still waiting for the AMA statement that it does.
